Robert Hosea to Abraham Lincoln, February 7, 1861
The tariff question will be sprung upon
us within a few weeks, and the battle
ground the north west. The conspirators
are trying to get the control of a hall
in this city to open the agitation, and
I learn have a daily paper enlisted
in their cause.
God grant they may not
succeed in their nefarious schemes,
and may He endow you with strength
of mind and wisdom to meet the coming
troubles which I fear are in store for you,
the people will sustain you, and God
grant you may come from the ordeal
with a reputation for wisdom and
patriotism second to none but that of
the Father of his Country.
Under God the only
hope is to divide the south, if only Virginia
Kentucky Tennesee and Louisiana can
be made to understand their safety and
prosperity are inseparable from the Union
we can save the structure yet.
Should my name be required, you can have
it, by expressing such a wish on your way from
Indianapolis to Cincinnati, on which trip I will be among
those to welcome you to this city. Respy yrs -- "Buckeye."
