John C. Calhoun to Lt. James E[dward] Colhoun, August 26, 1827
from it great events will spring.
It must lead to defeat or oppression
or resistance, or the correction
of what perhaps is a great
defect in our system, that
the separate geographical
interest[s] are not sufficiently
guarded. This for yourself.
We are all gratified to
hear of your health, and
of your high estimation with
the officers and crew. I never
doubted, that such would
be the case.
All of the family join their
affectionate love with their
wish for your safe and speedy
return.
Your sister [Floride Colhoun Calhoun] request[s] me to say
that the artificial flowers
came safe, have been distri-
buted as requested and are
much admired.
Tho' I write seldom, I make
up by length, and hope you will
consider the forfeiture of your cor-
respondence removed. J. C. Calhoun.
