Lewis Tappan Circular Letter of November 6, 1846
Soliciting Funding for the National Era Newspaper
we have an agent in Pennsylvania, who meets with much success.
Another agent visits Ohio, & is confident that he can obtain at least
$2,000 a year for 3 years from that State. A few individuals in this
City have commenced a subscription of $250 each per annum for 3 years.
If 25 persons give, pledge or collect per year $200 = $5,000
" 50 " " " " " $100 = $5,000
" 100 " " " " " $50 = $5,000
" 200 " " " " " $25 = $5,000
the whole sum will thus be secured . . . . . . . . . . . .$20,000
Will you furnish us with a list of Liberty Men, who in your
opinion are able & willing to subscribe $25 or more, classed under
different heads? Can you act as agent for your State or a
portion of it? The Comm[itt]ee would pay you expenses & a reason-
able compensation. What we do should be done quietly. Cir-
culars will do but little good. We must send living men to make
personal application. This is expensive, but it is the only effect-
ual way. Can you give us a list of men who could easily
subscribe the sum apportioned to your State? What do you think
of the apportionment? Dr. Bailey & Prof Hudson of Ohio were
here last week to confer with the Com. & have returned, full of
hope & confidence in the success of the great undertaking.
A Committee at Chicago have made an announcement
without consulting our Ex. Com., which we regret: they did it however
with friendly feelings. The plan we have in view, as you perceive, is
more extensive than theirs. They will act with us harmoniously. Can
you name one or more individuals well qualified to act as agent,
who would probably undertake the labor? Your views will be
very acceptable to the Committee, who would rejoice to have
